Performance Arts

At Aberdour, we take great pride in Performance Arts and how important it is in helping build confidence in children. The Innovation Centre houses a state of the art Music & Music Technology Rooms and four smaller Practice Rooms, as well as a Dance, Yoga & Drama Studio. The Main Hall transforms into our Theatre, fully rigged with lighting and audio equipment. We also have an Art Studio, Design & Technology lab and The Factory, which has 3D printers and image transfer machines.

Drama

Drama

Drama is woven into the curriculum from day one in Pre-Prep, with role-play activities and encouraging children to retell their favourite stories. There are productions in every year group, starting with the annual Reception Nativity and ending with the final Year 6 Production.

As they go up through the school, children are encouraged to take part in all aspects of a production; from set design, lighting, music, backstage and acting. This allows them to tie in many other elements of their learning by involving their creativity and use of technology.

There are weekly LAMDA sessions run as an extra-curricular activity for Years 2 to 6 and many of our children take their LAMDA Exams.  An external provider also runs Ballet lessons after school from Pre-Prep through to Year 6.

Of the 61 scholarships to independent senior schools awarded in 2023, three of them were for Drama or Performing Arts.

Music

Pupil Playing Piano

Pupils have weekly music lessons as well as the opportunity to learn a range of instruments and join the school choir (from Senior School). In lessons, they develop skills of music theory and keyboard playing, as well as studying the work of a chosen composer.

Pupils have plenty of opportunities to perform with regular informal concerts, assemblies, joint orchestra events with other schools, the House Music competition, external choir performances and the Summer Concert.

Art & Design

Pupil Painting

Art and Design at Aberdour encourages creativity and imagination. We provide visual, tactile and sensory opportunities for our students, in a relaxing and fun environment. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials to explore what they feel, see and think of the world around them. Through creativity, they learn to make asthetic and practical decisions, thus enabling them to become confident, independent learners.

Our students have the freedom to challenge ideas and shape their creative journey. They study the work and ideas of artists, sculptors and designers, as well as collaborating with visiting artists on projects which enrich our students learning experience.

We have a designated Art Studio and Design & Technology lab, allowing children to work with a variety of mediums. We invite a number of different artists to run workshops in either painting, wire sculpture or willow weaving, to name a few. We host an annual light show that incorporates showcasing the art and sculptures.
