IAPS 50m Champion!
IAPS Swimming Finals 7th June 2025
On Saturday 7th June five Aberdour boys (FAB!) made their way up to the London Aquatics Centre for the 2025 IAPS Swimming Finals: an event which IAPS describes as, “a day filled with exceptional competition and excitement, showcasing the talent from across more than 600 schools that make up IAPS membership.”
At the 2012 Olympic Games, world class athletes swam for gold in this very pool.
We had four boys swimming the U10 freestyle relay: Frankie, Alexander, Angus and Julian. They had qualified in a time of 1:13.09 (14th seed time). The relays were swum as heat declared winners. Incredibly, the boys dropped 4.47 seconds on their entry time but in the charged atmosphere, everyone was raising their game and their Finals position was 15th – a highly respectable result. Throughout the day we were seeing people we knew from our swimming clubs, who attend other local IAPS schools: the atmosphere was super-friendly and we were sharing their triumphs and disappointments too. (Tyler was delighted to see us and overjoyed to PB in the 50m breast.)
Individual events were swum as heats and finals: the finals coming immediately after session 2. We had Sam swimming U11 50m back, Angus U10 50m back, and Julian swimming U10 50m free. All three boys improved on their entry time and swam a personal best time (PB): all three of them remarked on it being a fast pool – they were very excited about their times (though, unfortunately they are not licensed).
The top 10 over 2 heats went through to the final: Angus and Julian went through. Angus swam a fraction slower in the final but moved from 6th position to 5th. Julian PB’d again in the final, maintaining his position: 1st … the IAPS U10 National Freestyle Champion!
