Library

Opening Times

It is open to all pupils in Years 3 to 8 during every morning break and to pre-prep pupils when accompanied by their teachers.

A member of staff is on duty during opening times and a team of library monitors assist with library duties. The monitors are volunteers from Year 7 and , as well as contributing to the smooth running of the library they develop their own knowledge and skills in this key area of the curriculum.

Stock

The library is well stocked. There is a wide range of fiction books ranging from classics and traditional stories to the very latest novels. Fiction books are arranged alphabetically on clearly labelled shelves and are coded by stickers to indicate genre. Poetry books are available covering a range of themes. An extensive range of non-fiction books is available. These cover all curiculum subjects and, in addition, include books on crafts, hobbies, general knowledge, jokes, quizzes and puzzles. There are over 3,000 books available for loan. In addition to the lending library there is a substantial reference section which includes encyclopaedias, dictionaries and almanacs.

Each term pupils are invited to add books they would like to see in the library to a 'wish list'. Most of the books requested are subsequently purchased for the library.

Magazines and Newspapers

The library has a subscription to 'First News' a weekly children's newspaper. We also subscribe to 'Kids National Geographic' which is delivered monthly. Other educational magazines such as 'Aquila' and the French language magazines 'Bonjour' and 'Allons-y' are also available.

Audio Facilities

A 'listening centre' with four sets of headphones is available. Audio tapes are provided for use in the library. Several book and tape sets and book and CD sets are offered. In addition there are several sets of longer novels in cassette form.

Borrowing

All books are logged on a database and all pupils are issued with a personal library number. Pupils are encouraged to have a library book on loan at all times. Books may be borrowed for up to three weeks after which they can be renewed or returned.

Library Lessons

Library lessons are part of the curriculum for pupils in Years 3 and 4. During these lessons pupils learn how the library is organised, learn about the items available, practice study and research skills and are introduced to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, reference books and poetry.

Displays

The library contains information posters and posters showing the latest books. There are displays that link with the time of the year or with particular themes. There is a notice board which displays information about competitions, events and topical news.

Study Facilities

The library can accommodate eight pupils at tables when project or group work is taking place. In addition there are soft chairs for relaxed, quiet reading.

Special Events

From time to time special events are held in the library. Activities include story-telling, jokes, quizzes, puzzles and craftwork.

Our school library is a busy, lively and well used facility.
